🌺 The Story of Cypress Gardens- Florida’s First Theme Park

📍 Cypress Gardens — 6000 Cypress Gardens Blvd, Winter Haven
Long before theme parks filled Central Florida, Cypress Gardens stood as the state’s original attraction. Founded in 1936 by Dick and Julie Pope, the park began as a botanical wonderland carved out of swampland on the shores of Lake Eloise.
The Popes planted thousands of flowers, sculpted winding paths, and created one of the most photographed gardens in the world. Cypress Gardens quickly became famous for its lush landscapes. Visitors wandered through acres of azaleas, camellias, and cypress trees draped with Spanish moss.
Southern Belles in hoop skirts became iconic throughout the park, posing for photos and greeting guests as if stepping straight out of a postcard.
But what truly propelled Cypress Gardens into international fame was the water…
Dick Pope helped pioneer water skiing, turning the Chain of Lakes into a stage for aquatic shows that featured pyramids, jumps, trick skiers, and eventually world-record performances. These shows were broadcast around the country and helped cement Winter Haven as the Water Ski Capital of the World.
Throughout the decades, Cypress Gardens drew millions of visitors, hosted celebrities, and even served as a filming location for Hollywood movies and television specials.
📍 What’s There Now
The original gardens still exist inside LEGOLAND Florida Resort. The famous banyan tree, planted in 1939, the gazebo, and the quiet lakeside pathways remain open to guests who want to experience the historic heart of Cypress Gardens.
💡 Did You Know?
Cypress Gardens is often credited with popularizing water skiing worldwide. More than fifty movies, newsreels, and TV specials were filmed on its lakes and in its gardens.
