🦃 How Publix Helped Shape Thanksgiving in Winter Haven

📍 The Original Publix Building — 58 4th Street NW, Winter Haven
If you grew up in Polk County, Thanksgiving probably started with a trip to Publix. That tradition goes back much further than most people realize. Before Publix became a Florida icon, its roots were planted right here in Winter Haven, and those early years played a surprisingly big role in how local families prepared for the holiday.
Publix founder, George Jenkins, opened his very first successful store in downtown Winter Haven in 1930, right on Fourth Street. At a time when most grocery stores still operated with clerks behind the counter, Jenkins introduced something completely new for Florida: a modern, self-service experience where shoppers could walk aisles, choose their own items, and pick up everything needed for a holiday meal in one place.
Thanksgiving quickly became one of the busiest times of the year. Locals crowded the store for fresh produce, holiday baking supplies, and the novelty of buying a turkey ready to take home and cook. Families who had once relied on small markets and farmstands were now doing their entire Thanksgiving shop under one roof, which felt revolutionary in the 1930s and 40s.
Those years helped cement Publix as part of Winter Haven’s community rhythm. The store grew, moved, and modernized over time, but holiday shopping remained the moment when families lined up, exchanged recipes in the aisles, and bumped into neighbors they had not seen since the year before.
What began as one small Winter Haven market became part of the way Floridians prepare for Thanksgiving, long before Publix became the statewide staple it is today.
💡 Did You Know?
During the early years, Publix offered special Thanksgiving promotions that included fresh citrus from local groves, which often appeared on holiday tables alongside traditional dishes.
