📜 Historic Haven Highlights
🎶 Where Winter Haven Found Its Sound

📍 The Derry Down — 297 5th Street NW
Before Winter Haven was known for theme parks or chain-of-lakes living, it was quietly shaping the sound of American music.
In 1964, local high-schooler Gram Parsons — who would later help pioneer country-rock with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers — began performing at a small teen club on 5th Street NW called The Derry Down.
Opened by Gram’s stepfather, local businessman Bob Parsons, the club was designed as a safe space for teens to play and listen to live music. Inside, folding chairs faced a modest stage lined with string lights and amplifiers. On any given weekend, you might hear Parsons’ early band The Legends blending rock-and-roll with country twang — a sound that would later influence artists from The Eagles to Emmylou Harris.
After Parsons left Winter Haven to attend Harvard and eventually chase music full-time, The Derry Down remained a beloved hangout through the late ’60s. Generations later, it still stands as one of Florida’s few surviving teen-club music venues from that era.
And with Parsons’ birthday falling on November 5, it’s the perfect week to remember how one small stage in downtown Winter Haven helped launch a Southern sound that changed rock music forever.
📍 What’s There Now:
The Derry Down still stands at 297 5th Street NW, fully restored by the Main Street Winter Haven team.
The building now operates as a community music venue and listening room, hosting live shows, songwriter nights, and youth performances throughout the year.
You can tour the space or attend events celebrating Gram Parsons’ legacy, keeping alive the spirit of creativity that began there more than half a century ago.

🇺🇸 Winter Haven Proclaims “United States Marine Corps Week”

Image courtesy of Winter Haven City Commission Meeting Report
Mayor Nathaniel Birdsong, Jr. officially proclaimed November 10 – 14, 2025 as United States Marine Corps Week in the City of Winter Haven — honoring the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps and recognizing the many Marines who continue to serve our community long after active duty.
The proclamation celebrates local Marines who’ve become teachers, firefighters, police officers, and community leaders, as well as organizations like the Marine Corps League, the Young Marines, and JROTC programs that keep those values of service alive.
It’s a moment of local pride — and a reminder that “The Chain of Lakes City” runs deep with stories of courage, leadership, and service.

🐶 Pets Of The Week
Kodiak & Felix

🐶 Kodiak is a brown and white adult male Siberian Husky mix with striking blue eyes and movie-star good looks. He’s neutered, playful, and always ready for an adventure.
If you’ve ever wanted a loyal companion who doubles as your personal snow wolf (minus the snow), Kodiak’s your guy. He’s been waiting for his forever home since September 23rd and with the Fall air settling in, it’s the perfect time to take him for a run or play in the park!
🐈Felix is a neutered adult male orange tabby and white Domestic Shorthair with a calm charm and a wise, gentle face. He’s the type of cat who would rather supervise your day from a sunny windowsill than cause any trouble.
He’s been waiting patiently at the shelter since October 10, and we think it’s time this gentleman found his forever home.
